For the patio, recessed and mobile solar outdoor deck lighting create a bit of sophistication and a parasol light attached under the parasol illuminates your evenings.

Garden path lighting softly showcases your home and landscape design. Lighting your garden extends the amount of time you have to enjoy the outdoors while enhancing the value of your home.

There are many types of pathway light fixtures available; some require wiring and others harness the energy of the sun. Most likely, you’ll want to select garden path lighting that corresponds with the exterior style of your home. If your home is traditional in design, a popular option is lantern-style outdoor path lighting. You can select from round or square bulb coverings made of copper or aluminum that are suspended from hooks or positioned atop posts.

For a more contemporary look, consider garden path lighting that features a more minimal design. Aluminum torches are a unique form of pathway lighting that enhances the beauty of your walkway during the day or at night. Sleek, sophisticated, stainless steel pathway lights are also a good choice for a modern home.

Solar garden lights are an economical and attractive type of garden path lighting. Line the path to your garden with mission style solar lights, dome lights, or lantern-style solar lights. Adding solar garden light fixtures along your garden path conserves energy while still creating a sense of drama upon approach. If your garden is designed with various winding paths, solar stepping stones might be an attractive addition to your garden.

Solar pathway lights are surprisingly affordable. They are frequently sold in sets of four or six lights per package, and they are easy to arrange along a path. Be sure to add enough lights to safely lead you or those visiting your garden, as this type of solar garden lighting tends to be dimmer than the electric-powered version. Be sure to position them so they receive sun throughout the day and aren’t blocked by the shade of your home or a tree.

Garden path lighting can provide the finishing touch to a garden design. Following a softly illuminated pathway increases your sense of anticipation as to what awaits you at the end of the journey. Being led to an area of tranquil beauty that you created, where you can rest and restore your mind and body, is a very satisfying reward.

If you’re thinking about installing solar power lights outside your home, you’re well on the way to lifting the appearance of the outside of your home – and keeping money in your wallet. These are only a couple of advantages of solar lighting. Let’s look at what else solar lighting outside the home can do for you.

  1. Outdoor solar lighting costs nothing to run. You’ll need to buy the lights of course, but what’s interesting is that these lights will cost much less than standard flood lights or garden lights that run on electricity. You can have beautiful garden light without adding a penny to your electricity bill.
  2. Using solar energy is good for the environment. It lessens your carbon footprint by reducing greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. Using less electricity is a good thing. Because this solar powered lighting runs off the energy produced by the sun, it is free and environmentally friendly.
  3. Using a solar light to brighten your yard is much safer than the alternative. These lights are often placed or staked into the ground along pathways or among gardens. Solar lights don’t get hot to the touch or have electricity running through them. This makes them safe for your children, family pets, and any nature that may come into contact with the light.
  4. Solar powered lighting is the easiest way to give light to a dark area outside your home. With traditional or standard lighting methods such as garden lighting or using outdoor flood lights, there’s much in the way of preparation before you even begin installation of the lights.

If you’re placing electrical lighting onto the outside of your home, prepare to get involved with drilling and running electrical cable into your home. If you’re looking to install electrical lighting among a pathway, the cable must be buried into the ground and run toward the house to be powered. Again, expect much higher electrical bills. Think about how much adding eight or ten more lights to your home will cost per month.

With solar lighting there isn’t much in the way of installation to make the job last for much more than an hour at most. If you’re looking to add the lights among a garden or path, simply stake them onto the ground. That’s really all there is to it.

Solar lighting can make life easier because after its set, you won’t have to think or mess with it. Just sit back and let the sun light your yard at night.

Whether you’re using outdoor lights to showcase your magnificent garden or because you want to make sure your property is safe from trespassers or intruders, investing in solar powered landscape lighting not only involves proper planning but also caring for the fixtures so they don’t get damaged easily.

Here are some things to remember to make sure that your outdoor landscape lights are going to last as long as your house will:

•The right materials – choosing the right materials for your garden lights is one of the keys to protecting them against damage.  Fixtures made of heavy-duty, stainless-steel is the best choice for outdoor lighting.  But in order to make sure that they can withstand the harshest weather and will never rust, check the warranty.  Apart from that, they must have wet seal, silicone-based gaskets as well as heat tempered glass.

•The right place – place your solar garden lights where they can be protected from the weather or from traffic or other yard equipment.  You can mount them beneath terraces, canopies or porches or you can set beneath the curb.  Although your fixtures are guaranteed built to last and will not give in even to the harshest weather condition, shielding them from these harsh elements will prolong their life and usability.  Plus, keeping them out of site will not only prevent anyone from trampling upon but also make the outdoor lighting pristine.

•Treatments – Treatments like metal sealants, anti-fog and glass treatments will keep your outdoor lights in tiptop shape.  Invest on the best treatments to keep the glass on your light fixtures clear and dry and protected against natural elements.

•Get professional help – it won’t hurt to spend a few thousand dollars to seek professional help when it comes to planning your outdoor lighting, especially if you’re dealing with an elaborate lighting plan.  Getting help from a specialist spares you the trouble of faulty wiring and messy lighting plans.

Solar powered garden lights have emerged as one of the great alternatives to the lights that are powered with the conventional method of using electricity. But what we might not know is the huge variety of solar light systems that are available. There is a type of solar light which is available for almost every purpose of yours- be it an indoors lighting system or outdoor solar garden lights, both traditional or funky. They cater to almost every need of yours and have been made in such a way that they are extremely easy to place and operate.

The solar garden lights which are mostly on display in stores are the ones which light the pathway or driveway. But there are several others, which are available in different colors, shapes and sizes. To appeal to the kids, there have been solar lights which have been made in the shape of animals, or flowers.  For those who love dogs there are solar garden lighting systems that have been made in the shape of different breeds of dogs, well if that’s your taste. They are also available in the form of rocks which would glow with different colors. All of these would make your homes and Gardens look very stylish and trendy. Such things are quite new to the world, and add a uniqueness factor to the decors of your home and garden.

These solar lighting systems, whether they are used indoors or outdoors, are a great option to be thought of and quite practical too. They do not require some complex installation procedures. The entire process is so simple that even a layman can understand and implement. Besides all the advantages that solar lights have, there are certain shortcomings too. You must keep in mind that they cannot be relied upon fully since they are quite dependent on the having the sunshine. If the sun decides not to come out that day then you will not get any lighting. But, with constant evolution, solar panels with photovoltaic LEDs and good batteries have been developed which are much better than the previous models.

For example, there are portable light kits that include three 6 watt CFL light bulbs, which provide the same power as a 30 watt bulb. The power is provided by a 10 watt solar panel and a 12 volt 10 amp battery box. If you’re in need of more power, then you can chose to go with another kit that has three 11 watt CFL light bulbs, which are the same as three 60 watt bulbs. Garden lighting is one of the most popular ways to enhance the beauty and elegance of your home and yard — creating the perfect night-time curb appeal is one of the best, and easiest ways to set your home apart from the rest. Types of garden lights come in a myriad of styles, but choosing the ones that you like the most is only half the battle. Before even considering what lights to purchase, it is most important to first consider what effect(s) you wish to achieve, and what lights will work best to create the ambiance you hope to bring to your home and property. Today’s vast array of solar garden lights add even more creative flexibility to your lighting projects — they can be placed virtually anywhere, and moved at any time. Solar lights are definitely the most versatile means of achieving the outside lighting effects you’ll require to create the most captivating and awe-inspiring impact. To determine what lights you’ll need, start by considering the lighting effects that will best suit your home and garden.

Accent Lighting

First, think about anything that you’d like to showcase in your yard. Plants and flowers are a great place to start when creating an outdoor garden lighting scheme. What do you enjoy looking at the most during the day, and what features in your yard tend to attract others’ attention? These are the items you’d probably want to accent in the evening hours. For these items, begin by finding accent lights that will softly shine light directly on the plant or feature that you’d like to showcase in the evening.

Directional Lighting

Adding drama to outdoor features is a great way to even further enhance them. Although you may have items that you’d like to “accent,” you may have other objects that you’d like to have stand out even more. By placing a light directly below your feature, you’ll dramatically enhance the look of it when using this up-lighting technique. Lighting objects from the ground up creates a completely different effect than simply casting a general accent light on the subject. Conversely, down-lighting is exactly the opposite of this, but creates an entirely different effect yet again. The effect of downward-directed-lighting is a great enhancement that will place any object on centre stage, and once again set it apart from other up-lit, or accent-lit items; moreover, down-lighting is also a great way to simply add general lighting to any area. Spot lights are a great style of solar light to achieve this lighting technique.

Backlighting

If you’ve ever been for a portrait sitting at a photographer’s studio, you may have noticed that there is usually a “backlight” to cast a nice glow around your head and shoulders – backlights provide a good visual separation between the subject and the background. This principle, when applied to your garden lighting, creates a beautiful appeal, and it definitely lends to a very manicured look. Implementing backlighting is a fantastic way to add another layer of light. Layering light adds dimension and drama, and this is an ideal instance where the versatility and mobility of solar lights will reap a lot of benefit.

Highlighting

Texture is an essential element in design. Skimming light at an almost parallel angle to the textured surface of your object, let’s say a nice retaining wall that contains a portion of your garden, can be just enough to add a contrasting texture when admiring the softness of the foliage it contains. Adding these highlights to strong texture creates deep shadows augmenting the visual appeal of of the light-skimmed surface. If you chose to light the wall behind your garden this way, you’d also be creating a silhouette-like effect for any object in front of the lit wall. This technique can be used as another light-layering option.

If you’re planning to use any “traditional”, wired garden lights, be sure to carefully plan where they will go — their placement will be permanent, so moving them when night falls will definitely be an issue.  The absolute best way to implement any outside lighting scheme is to use solar lights … their versatility and portability as outside lights make them the easiest, most productive choice.  Not only will their use allow you to create your lighting display in the evening when you can see the effects, but their light will be free of charge.  Solar garden lights aren’t what they used to be — they are now more powerful, charge better in low-sun areas, and are brighter for much longer.  Using the advice presented here, it is now well within your reach to create beautifully lit landscape better even than the Jones’s!

A well lit yard can easily augment a home’s safety by scaring away would be wrongdoers and lighting the way for someone coming home after dark.  However, the increased electrical bills that come along with traditional yard lights are no picnic, and may not feel justified to someone looking to “green” up their lifestyle.  Fortunately, there is a low cost alternative to traditional yard lighting-solar garden lights.

Solar garden lights absorb energy from the sun during the day, then use that energy to create light after dark.  Even on a cloudy day, the lights can store and emit energy to keep the lighting level ample.  These lamps are comparable in cost to traditional lighting fixtures, and may in fact be cheaper.  There are many options as far as quality and price are concerned.  However, one should be certain that they are getting a suitable quality fixture.  In the long run, these items save costs and require absolutely no electricity use.

There are an array of solar styles and designs available on the market.  One may purchase a large lamp or several smaller ones that can be laid along a path or courtyard.

Solar lights may be purchased from a number of retailers, from big box stores and mass merchants to specialty stores.  The Internet is a useful tool for one looking to compare prices without driving all over town.  The world wide web also gives one access to shops that are not in their area.  Most will ship the lights anywhere in the country or world.

Brightness will likely vary depending on the type of bulb or battery in the solar lamp.  LED lights are a popular choice for quality and brightness. Internet users can use a search engine such as Google or a shopping site such as Nextag to compare prices on one page.  For example, KMart offers a four piece LED solar light set for about thirty dollars, compared to an eighty dollar two piece set from Best Buy.

Whether your landscaped escape includes paths to wander, ponds to ponder or a pool to splash in, solar lighting is the smartest way to add to their beauty, utility and charm. You deserve to bask in their gentle glow at the end of your hard day.

Garden lights are especially beautiful because flowers look so lovely when they are illuminated and shining at night. The beauty of a flower looks so prominent when it has a brilliant light underneath the bloom. Usually flowers are only seen in the day time or under the moonlight but when a garden light is added they are seen in a dramatic way that has a sharp contrast in the dark. Some gardens are close to outdoor outlets but other gardens bloom very far away from electrical outlets.

Solar garden lights are entirely wireless so even the gardens that are far from outlets can be enjoyed by the light coming from solar powered lights. Exterior lighting can really add a splash of illumination to any exterior space in the dark hours of the night. Trees look very different when they are lit up at night. Solar lights that have a tilting head can easily be aimed up at a special tree in front of a house can highlight the beauty of a tree that is usually only seen by daylight.

Outdoor solar lights are an energy efficient and wireless way to light up any outdoor space. Because they are wireless they can literally be used anywhere in a place that the sun will shine on them during the day. Solar garden lights have solar panels on them that convert the sunlight into energy to power the lamps. They can be used to light up a dark walkway in the front of a house, to illuminate a path around the side of the home, or to line the edges of a patio for extra illumination. There are also solar lights that can be attached to the side of a house or a tree so that the light comes from above to shed a pool of light over a space on a deck or terrace.

If you have certain areas of your property where you regularly walk through in the dark, then it may be time to consider installing an outdoor solar security lighting system. These types of lighting systems will keep the darkened corners of your property more secure and hopefully prevent anyone from trying to break into your home.  They are an essential part of any garden lighting scheme. Feeling secure on your property is a must for any home owner, but you don’t have to go through the expensive and frustrating task of having a professional security system installed, or even installing it yourself. Studies have shown that homes with garden lights installed have a significantly lower rate of break ins than homes with no outdoor flood lights or other security lighting installed.

These lighting systems come in different sizes and styles.  The one you pick will depend on how many areas you need to light and how big your property is. For most homes, you can get away with using 4 or 5 light kits, placing one light at each corner of your house, with the last light going onto your garage or shed building. For larger properties, though, you will want to look for kits that include multiple numbers of lights, such as 10, possibly even 15. This will ensure that you have adequate lighting around our entire property, and help to ward off would-be crooks.

security floodlights

Security Floodlights

When it comes to actually placing them, you’ll want to ensure that they are facing where you typically walk, as well as aimed to light up the entire area. Most times, if you place them in a clockwise motion, with each light pointing to the next area around your home, you will be able to cover every side of your house, without allowing light into your windows, while also being able to use the last light on top of your garage to light up your driveway when you enter. Regardless of what you choose, your options really are endless in terms of how you can use solar lights.

Many folks have a garden or at least a patio or deck area that provides a useful additional space for relaxing and entertaining on a warm evening. Or at least it would if it were lit properly. If haven’t gotten around to installing some outdoor deck lighting then you don’t know what you’re missing and you’re missing a trick.

Far and away the cheapest, quickest, easiest and most effective way to make any space both more useable and attractive is by installing suitable garden lighting. There are countless, easy to install lighting products to choose from. The average person can completely transform their deck or patio into a visually appealing outdoor room over a single weekend.

The main choice to make when selecting outdoor lighting is between solar powered garden lights and low voltage ones.  Though these two are not mutually exclusive and you can mix fittings of either type in the same space. These days you’ll also notice that many domestic fittings, regardless of their power source, are in fact LED garden lights because they last so much better, are more robust and deliver more light for less power.

There are pros and cons on both sides. Solar garden lights require no wiring and can therefore be bought, put in the desired position and used that very same evening. Low voltage outdoor lighting requires an indoor transformer fed from the main electrical circuit, this then feeds through to an outside low voltage cable that runs to each of the lights in turn (commonly this outdoor cable is in a loop and individual light fittings are spurred off it).

A Low Voltage Garden Light

Obviously, with low voltage lighting there is more to do up front and the cables have to be secured and preferably concealed. The main benefits though are lights that are generally brighter and stay bright as long as you want,  and are easier to control (you can switch the lights on and off when you want). Solar lights mostly stay on all night (or until their batteries go flat) and come on when their sensors detect low light.  Some do have on/off switches but you have to go around to each and switch them off, which can be something of a nuisance. Also, the batteries in solar garden lights have a limited effective lifespan and don’t charge up properly during the winter months.

The types of light fittings you should consider putting top of your list for a weekend patio makeover project are, in no particular order: lanterns, deck post lights, recessed LED deck lights, down lights and rope lights. You will discover there are plenty more options to choose, but this handful of basic types are most suited to lighting an outdoor area intended for entertaining and unwinding.

Many of you have probably thought about the idea of going green, even if it is something that you have not fully put into practice yet. One of the easiest and simplest green investments that can be made is the use of outdoor solar lighting. Solar lighting is fun, functional, and natural and uses the energy of the sun to add light to your living or outdoor space.

Solar lights go beyond the lights that brighten up a path or driveway. Some solar powered garden lights can give you up to 5 hours of continuous lighting; others, such as solar security lights, can come on whenever you need them and store enough energy to be available any time. The savings on these lights are quite substantial; considering the costs of electricity these days, an individual can consider solar lights to be green investments. Another reason to add these lights is the fact that they are taking environmental consciousness into consideration.

Light Panel for Solar Lights

It is true that some people do not like solar garden lights because they feel that they are costly initially and not as effective. However, even if you pay a bit more to purchase the lights, they will rarely have to be replaced. People have to make a decision as to whether they are being penny wise and pound foolish by buying traditional incandescent lighting.

The use of solar lights can help end our dependency of fossil fuels. They are safe, effective, and can save the environment. There is nothing quite so advantageous as using solar lights, as they are safe to transport, non-hazardous and economical. In addition, the fact that they come in a variety of light sizes and designs makes them very utilitarian, whatever your lighting needs are. The next time that an individual considers purchasing lights, making them the solar variety is a smart choice that is not only economically wise but environmentally so.

If you want to install a low-maintenance, eco-friendly landscape lighting system, LED garden light fixtures give you the most variety and also the biggest bang for your environmental buck.  Compared to incandescent, or even compact florescent light bulbs, LEDs use exponentially less energy and put out more light, reducing your power bills and helping out the environment along the way.  Depending on what type of LED light you buy, the installation process can be either simple or require an extra step or two.

There are essentially two types of LED landscape lighting that you can use in your lawn and the difference is in how they are powered.  You can choose either solar LED garden light or LED garden lighting that runs off of a low voltage circuit in your yard.  Installing solar powered lights is a snap, because all you have to do is place the light and forget about it.  The photovoltaic cell that powers the light, the battery that stores the power, and the LED itself are all contained in the same unit.

While solar powered lights are easy to install, many people opt instead for lights powered on a low voltage circuit.  Solar LED lights need to be installed in areas there there’s a lot of direct sunlight, limiting where they can be place.  You’re also relatively limited in the type of lights that you can buy because they have to be a certain size to be able to accommodate a photovoltaic cell big enough to power them.  Opting instead for lights powered on a low-voltage circuit removes both of these limitations, letting you choose from thousands of different fixtures and place your lights where you want.

However, if you decide to install low voltage lights, the installation process is a little more difficult than the one for solar lights.  Luckily, it’s not out of the capabilities of most DIYers.  First, you need to buy and install at 12v transformer that will have the wattage capacity to run all of the different light fixtures you want to run.  If you’re installing a garden lighting system in your home for the first time, make sure that you get a LED transformer.  These transformers guarantee a constant 12 volts to the line.  If you use a traditional transformer, the wattage can vary slightly, which will damage your LED lights.

If you want to add LEDs to an existing landscape lighting system, it is possible, but you need to find the right lights.  Make sure that you find LED fixtures that are marked on the box that they are able to be used with a traditional 12 volt transformer.  Another option, if you are planning on expanding your existing lighting plan, is to run two transformers.  The existing transformer that you have will be used to power the incandescent fixtures, while the brand new LED transformer will be used to run the LED ones.

LEDs make a great addition to any garden lighting plan.  They are expensive initially, but over the long run they will save you money and time (because you only have to replace the bulbs once every few years), and even help to protect the environment.  Not only that, installation is a snap and usually doesn’t take any longer than normal light fixtures would, unless you need to install a new transformer.   Some great deals can be found on LED lights around the internet, so make sure to search online for great deals before you head down to your local lawn care store.

Solar yard lights are a wonderful and efficient way to light up your garden from twilight until dawn without having your utility bills skyrocket in the process.  These garden lights draw their power directly from the sun, so that you won’t have to use any power for them to work.  Unfortunately, this also means that they need a great deal of direct sunlight and will limit where you can place the lights.  Despite their limitation and the occasional cloudy weather that may prevent the batteries from getting fully charge, solar garden lights are a wonderful addition to any garden area.

Maybe you have seen your neighbors with outdoor solar lighting in their yard or perhaps multiple solar lights pushed into soil along a walkway to their home. This is just an example of how easy it is to use these lights.  They require no wires as the solar light is self contained and just needs to be put in place and left to run.  There are are even solar lights that are waterproof, making them suitable for use in a fountain or pond.  They float on the surface making it easy to decoratively light water features or your pool on a nice summer evening without a big utility bill.  It also provides a nice romantic light if you want to take a swim with your significant other.  You can find these lights available for sheds or a greenhouse and can be used either just when you need them or they can run all night long.

In recent year’s solar technology has significantly come down in price making it affordable for the average homeowner to light pathways, gardens and pool sides without increasing their power bills and helping to protect the environment. You will also find specialty solar lighting that can provide functionality beyond just good looks.  Solar security lights are a huge trend right now and really provide a cost effective way to add protection for your personal property and family’s safety.   Make sure to visit a few online retailers to check out the various options available for your solar lighting project!
