Solar Garden Lights Not Working? Fix Them!

Are your solar garden lights not working? If the solar post lights and other types of solar lighting that you bought aren’t working, there are a few easy fixes that you can try before you rush out and buy new light fixtures. Here are a few of the things that you can try out.

Make Sure The Lights Are Getting Enough Sun

Most of the problems with solar lights can be traced back to the fact that they don’t receive enough light during the day. If you want your lights to stay lit all night, they need at a minimum several hours of direct sunlight each day. If you have your lights installed in shady areas, like a garden spotlight installed under a tree for up lighting, try moving it into the direct sunlight and see if this improves the performance of the light.

Broken Solar Lights

Unfortunately, if the light does work better in the sun, you won’t be able to place it back in the same spot. Your best option here is to find a set of lights hooked to a low voltage transformer to install the lights in shady areas and use your solar powered lights in sunnier areas for a different purpose.

Change the Batteries

Another common problem with solar lights is that the batteries have worn out. Every rechargeable battery, even the best ones, will only last for a certain amount of charges. Using the lights outside where they’ll be subject to freezing during the winter and heat during the summer can shorten their lifespan even more. Once the batteries have gone past their useable life span, they’ll start making the lights dimmer and the lights will start lasting for a shorter and shorter time.

Luckily, most solar lights today use rechargeable AA batteries that you can find at almost any electronics store for a cheap price and they can be replaced very easily with just a screwdriver. Many companies also offer rechargeable batteries made just for outdoor lighting, such as these Moonrays Rechargeable NiCd AA Batteries for Solar Powered Units.

Check the Light Bulb

A final thing that you can check on your solar lights to make sure that they are working is to check the light bulb. Most solar lights today are powered by LED lights, which should last several years before they burn out. However, since the lights are outside they can be hit or sometimes even freeze and break in the extreme cold, so make sure that you look at the light bulb to see if it is broken as well.

Very good info. One thing I would add is that the quality of your batteries is also important. You get what you pay for and especially when it comes to rechargeable batteries. Go the little extra in cost and you will never regret it.

    Thanks.
