When outdoor rugs were first used they always came in very dark, drab colors. After all they were merely used for wiping our feet before we went into the house to prevent dirt from the garden getting on the floors inside or they were nothing more than rubber matting to prevent slipping around the side of the pool or on the deck.

These days we are more interested in making every part of our home environment look and feel good and now we see our gardens as an extension of our interior. We are creating outside living spaces in our gardens though the the use of garden lights and outdoor deck lighting. This has resulted in the creation of some beautiful outdoor patio rugs which are meant to be admired not just walked on and they are available in every color under the sun.

If you are designing an outdoor living space, then you need to choose a color scheme for it as if it was an actual room. You can even start with an outdoor rug and use that as a basis for your scheme or start with your patio seat cushions and work from there. In any case, you should be able to find a suitable rug especially if you look on line where you will see a large selection of rugs for your patio or deck in every shape, color and size imaginable.

If you prefer natural colors, look for outdoor rugs in natural materials such as bamboo which go well with such a scheme or choose polypropylene rugs in beige or olive green. A patterned rug will help hide dirt as well as look good. (Although these rugs can be cleaned easily by hosing them down you don’t want to be constantly having to do that).

For a brighter look, you will find rugs in tropical shades or in contemporary colors such as purple, gray and black and you can match the design to the style of outdoor room you want to create whether that is a tropical rain forest room or a country retreat.
