Unique Decorative Garden Lighting Ideas
Decorative garden lighting is a quick, easy way to snazzy up your property ahead of a get together or just for fun. Aside from the common decorative lights we all see around Christmas or the tiki torches that pop out every summer, try to find some new and unique decorative light fixtures to use in your garden. They will set your landscape apart from your neighbor’s and ensure that you will create a memorable experience for anyone who visits you.
One really great unique garden lighting option is using fiber optic lighting. Fiber optics are a thick strand of tubes or “fibers” that transmit signal in the form of light, or “optics”, hence the name. Fiber optic cable itself carries no electrical charges and is lit by one light at the very end of the cable. This makes it a great lighting system for use where there is likely to be water. Fiber optics can be used to light ponds, pools, decks, and other areas prone to being damp while at the same time removing any and all shock hazards. On top of all this, they are still fairly rare to see in many gardens, so installing them will set your landscape apart.
Another one of the best garden decor ideas around is to use lanterns. The actual light the lantern gives off doesn’t matter here as much as the look of the lantern itself. You can use pumpkin lanterns for Halloween, Buddhist-style paper lanterns to give you garden an oriental feel, or even old-fashioned lanterns designed to evoke the feelings of a stroll in the old world. Lanterns are a great way to light your yard and also serve as great decorative garden lighting options.
Rock lights also work well as decorative lighting and follow basic garden design principles. These lights are built into realistic-looking fake rock formations that can be installed in ponds and other bodies of water or above the ground in strategic areas. They do a great job of casting ambient light while at the same time hiding the light fixture it is coming from, satisfying two of the basic rules of outdoor landscape lighting.
While they’re mostly associated with Christmas, string lights work well as decorative lighting as well. While leaving up your Christmas lights year round just looks tacky, if you use them with moderation, and only on special occasions, such as for birthday parties and other get-togethers, string lights can bring out a festive atmosphere that makes people want to let loose.
There are many different options for decorative garden lighting out today. What works for someone else’s yard might not work for yours however. Always keep in mind what mood you want to set, the lighting style you already have in place, and your landscape in general. And above all have fun installing the lights. The more fun you have, the more fun and decorative they ultimately end up looking.
